My copy of the remake of 'The Hills have Eyes' came this morning. Thanks to you and Duds for the recommendation. And can you tell Duds to stop scaring me like that. My heart stopped for a moment there.
I watched the film this afternoon. It was ace. I liked the sneaky reference to other horror films too: 2001, Clockwork Orange and also Don't Look Now. Great stuff.
I enjoyed it a lot, but thought the ending was a bit lame. I get really annoyed when people, having just shot the psycho, put the gun down right next to them. It's just stupid, as psychos never die first time. I watched half of Wolf Creek last night (because I didn't programme the VCR properly), and someone does it there as well. Think I'll work on a top ten 'Really Irritating Things In Films' post.
Yeah, and can you put "woods that suddenly appear in cities" (Assault on P13 remake) in there too, please.
Also: Groups of people splitting up when a serial killer/ax maniac is on the loose...
Also: Lingering cut-away shots half way thru a movie to an old box of explosives/inflammable chemicals/a live electrical like/flare gun/jagged piece of broken wood...thus completely fucking sign-posting how the hero/heroine will dispose of the zombie/shark/axe maniac later on in the final reel.
Also: ironically self-referential meta-horror films like "Scream" wh/ point out the points above.
Also: anything w/ Robert Englund in it, apart from "V".
I watched 'Wolf Creek' this afternoon and was rather impressed. Yes, there is a part where she puts the gun by his side.
Also, where people stop and look around a room when a psycho is after them. One of the heroines in 'W.C' stood and watched two videos (which just so happened to be in the right place) for about five minutes and rooted through some bags. Glanced at photographs on the wall. Had a picnic...phoned a friend...like you would do that.
And parts where things that might be 'too difficult' for the audience are explained. Well, we're too thick to geddit, right?
Actually, I know people like these bits sometimes...the hand at the end of 'Carrie' for example, but the 'this is not the end' moments. I find them really irritating. Especially when they are ridiculous.
And...when someone has basically been beaten to a pulp, shot, maimed and nearly killed...they seem to have super-human strength. That guy at the end of 'Hills' for example - if anyone had cracked my skull against some rocks...I wouldn't be able to get onto my knees, let alone beat a mutated radiation victim to a pulp.
Having said that, I loved the bit where he was in the freezer. That was brilliant. Claustrophobia and horror at its best.
I was talking about this today as well...would you run away from the psycho...or would you go back and fight? Mostly, people run away. Would I hide? Would I fight back? Would I freeze? I hope I wouldn't be like the other woman in 'W.C' - a gibbering wreck. I need Black Widow to give me some training. I do think that it is surprising that there is still that thing where certain people get killed first. Why is it so easy to guess who is going to 'get it' first.
I'd fight and I'd fight dirty. Take the fucker out as quickly as possible any way you can. Otherwise it will never end. I really hated 'Wolf Creek'. Apart from the crap bits Molly already pointed out - when the two girls are out in the middle of nowhere & the psycho's gone down the ravine - they stand in front of the headlights talking at full volume. They don't even fucking whisper. They deserved to die. As for 'Hills' - I liked it. And the fucker is a mutant so he might have like really thick skin or something. 'Assualt On Precinct 13' - couldn't agree more Kek. Uber-Toss. Round my way we're all waiting for 'Eight Below'. Trust me, it's gonna storm the straight to video market.
I'm glad you said fight. That's what I decided in the end. I just kept shouting in 'WC' - get a weapon, get a weapon, get a weapon. But then I realised I was getting a bit too excited and stopped. I was wondering if anyone else was thinking along the same lines of 'Get the bugger' like me.
Can I put in a good word for the baby in 'Hills' too. Stayed clean for the whole time it was kidnapped. And didn't cry much either. Its hair was a bit mad too. Should have been given a bigger part.
To deal with a psyco/alien once you've shot/stabbed him: Shoot/stab him again, and again. You can't be too sure how many fake endings there are. Or decapitate him with a spade. If you don't have a spade, jump up and down on his face for ages. Let's see the fucker come back from that.
But...sometimes they still get up after that. Even headless psychos can get up sometimes. Sometimes even I surface after losing my head.
I was thinking this morning...I wondered what you thought was the scariest thing you've ever seen. In films...or TV.
Sometimes the gore-fest stuff isn't really scary. I find 'Texas' and 'The Exorcist' extremly funny. I can't stop giggling. Perhaps it the 'suggestion' rather than seeing the actual moment.
I think Dudes really, really imagined doing that actually. If I ever get stuck in a run-down shack with a psycho after me...remind me to ask you and Dudes to come with me. I think you two would be a bonus.Shall we make a horror movie and then you can act out the spade part. Who could we get to play the psycho?
Although you might need me, I could do the hiding in the cupboard bits but I'm quite strong in a crisis. I once lifted a boat up into the air to save my sister from drowning. I don't know how I did it...but I did. So, perhaps you'll need me as a heroine.

She is wonderful. God, how I wish I looked like that.

The Dude is in the business of scaring people. It's his job.

Would you go for flight or fight, Dom?
