Magazine - The Light Pours Out Of Me

Howard Devoto : My favourite singer/lyricist ever.

Crucial, magical, irreplaceable ... I note, in recent years, many have pinched a few tricks from Gang of Four or Talking Heads, for instance, but can't think of anyone grappling with Magazine's legacy. Too individual, too stubborn, I suppose.
This song is one of their best, too.

I could never understand why Devoto was never hugely famous, though looking back now I'm kind of glad he wasn't.
Years ago I tried doing a cover of 'Rythmn Of Cruelty' - but we just couldn't not sound like Magazine so we ditched it.
Flashbacks of Chard....Vaughny having tapes of every single Peel Session...ahh.

I'm kind of glad Magazine never reformed like everyone else seems to have done.

Did you ever hear Ministry's cover of this? It's ace.

I am a song from under the floorboards.

St Anthony can tell you a funny story about me, a Magazine record, a record player and some sandpaper.

I am intrigued, as are others no doubt. Pray tell, dear Anthony...

Yeah, some poor soul, his only crime being to play 'Shot By Both Sides' endlessly in a room adjoining Molly's, went to play his favourite song one day only to hear the dreadful sound of a freshly sanded-down stylus remorselessly tearing through plastic. I am told he screamed like a woman.

Fuuuck... wish I hadn't asked - thought it was gonna be funny! :)

Wow, that's harsh.

St. Anthony said...

Yeah, many have crossed that Molly ... not many are around to talk about it.
She's taken sandpaper to more than just a stylus.

Hey, look, in my defence re 'sandpapergate', I'd just like to say that the track was prefaced with the whole first Lush album. Then the same track for three years at the same time each morning. Followed by verbal abuse from the lodger. And his loud singing when I was trying to sleep. That was the least of his crimes to be honest.

You can push the Mollster so far....y'know. I couldn't help myself.

Anyhow, he trashed my kitchen and said I had a face like a Girl's World, so well, what's a girl to do?

Actually, I think Girl's Worlds are rather cute.

Molly Bloom said...

Girl's World wahey!

Molly Bloom said...

Girl's World, Girls Aloud....same difference innit?

Same Difference....hmmm....sounds familiar...in a cheesy way. Think snow, think pillow fights, think CHEEEEEESE!

St. Anthony said...

Call me a rather base individual, but the small face on the left in that Girl's World avatar looks like Ciccionlina.

Likin' the new look Molly.
Anthony - you're a rather base individual.
Have to go...working V hard on a new Top Ten.
